[edit] Node.l informal meeting Monday 17th December, Deckspace

People attending: Ilze Black (Raylab), Mia Jankowicz & Anna Colin (Gasworks), Keith Watson, Adnan Hadzi (deptford.tv), Stephen Oldfield (ampersand.tv), James Stevens (dek.spc.org), Andrea Rota (liquidculture.eu), Leanne Bird and Laura Henry (bodydataspace), Atty, Steven (Adnan's friend), and one other?

The meeting began with food and wine. Keith Watson gave a summary of node.l’s history so far for attendees who were not familiar with it. The discussion then turned to the Subscriber_Meeting_29-10-2007 at Gasworks, in which Saul Albert had highlighted a number of node-esque events planned independently for March 2008 and had suggested framing this cluster as a sort of interim or stepping-stone node. This would stimulate the energy and involvement for a subsequent proper node season in March 2008 (March has always been discussed as next event, maybe larger one in November).

The group then considered issues brought up in emails by Ruth Catlow and Tim Jones which highlighted various areas in need of attention – (It was acnowledged the hard work everyone had put in last time.) preventing ‘burnout’ through uneven levels of commitment and input, questioning how genuinely broad consensus is achieved, and the hoary issue of fundraising.

The meeting then went on to address the practical aspects of some of these issues, identifying actions and deadlines, and people who would do them. Whilst everyone understood that the decision making process needs attention and had been discussed endlessly, at the moment there doesn't seem to be an alternative to the 'meeting based' consensus.

Aims:

  • To update the front end of the node.l website and make it current
  • To call for re-engagement with the node.l website and discussion list as ongoing calendar/networking tool and as regular communication.
  • To call for participation specifically within the March cluster
  • To produce a group poster/mailer for March cluster
  • To produce a reader subsequent to March
  • To fundraise for group marketing, website, and publication costs

We agreed that if something was to be done or highlighted during March, the following tasks were identified.

1)Updating node.l website with an announcement of the March cluster. Draft of call to be online.

  • Deadline: before Christmas
  • Who? Atty needs to be confirmed. Plus Mia to send him draft call on Friday to be distributed to all subscribers
    • Who has access to change the website front pages, is Atty happy to do this work?

2)Re-engagement with node.l platforms with a ‘use it or lose it’ type call. People should update their projects, activities etc on the website and re-subscribe to the discussion list in order to stay on, meaning that only active or interested people remain in touch.

  • Deadline: It was unclear if this should be the same call as the call for participation in the March cluster. If so, 20th Jan. If not, earlier. Retrieve discussion mailing list from back end of website (from Saul Albert?)
  • Who? Unsure. Mia and Anna circulate draft asap, send call before Christmas. Mailing list to be procured by Atty.

3)March cluster call to entire discussion list, subscriber list form last time, and on website. All projects under their own steam (ie funds) and node.l as a readymade networking tool and brand, rather than an organisational hub.

  • Deadline: 20th Jan
  • Who? Unsure. Mia and Anna circulate draft asap, send call before Christmas. Mailing list to be procured by Atty.

4)Group poster/mailer to be compiled from responses to call. All those involved with concrete funds requested to chip in with £200/300 each to cover print, (I think this is a lot per person/organisation for a listing, £50-£100 is more likely, keith) design and mailing costs. As this represents the major form of paper marketing it should be something that many can contribute to from their marketing budgets. Locate suitable designers. Formulate budget and get quotes.

  • Deadline: Call before Christmas, deadline for interest 20th Jan, defined deadline 12th Feb. Costs defined before 20th Jan?
  • Who? Mia & Anna

NB For the above tasks, see the draft call for March 08 node.l events and updates

Reader subsequent to March cluster budget for last reader to be requested (who managed this?). £15-20,000 needed. Separate meeting purely for the reader is probably necessary.

  • Deadline: none yet.
  • Who? Undefined

Fundraising for all this ACE Grants for the Arts was suggested, though it is tough and time is extremely short. A request for £5,000 could be put in by Keith. All funded March cluster participants would need to bring Keith their ‘in kind’ and cash contribution to costs – as not all of them attended this meeting this will need to be discussed and decided more formally. James Stevens also mentioned the LDA who habitually end up with fairly easily accessible underexpenditure during March – up to £30,000 could become available. (Since then we have learned fund would only become available IN March, and we would not know before this if we got it.) Adnan Hadzi has contact with Rebecca McGuire who is linked to LDA.

  • Deadline: ACE application asap – early Jan. LDA enquiry asap, news before next meeting.
  • Who? Keith to draft and send ACE application early Jan; all to get figures to him. Adnan to enquire about LDA money.

The next meeting was set for 29th January, no location confirmed, when hopefully we will have a lot of news and activity to share.
