[edit] What is NODE.London?
NODE.London is a voluntary gathering of people, organisations and projects that want to share and develop the infrastructure for media arts and related activities in London and beyond.
[edit] What are NODE.London's aims?
- To share and develop the infrastructure for media arts in London.
- To develop new methods of cooperation and distributed curation in arts and cultural organisation.
- To experiment critically with openness, transparency and decentralisation between art, engineering and activism.
- To raise the visibility and enhance the accessibility of media arts in London.
[edit] What are media arts?
We're not really sure. There are lots of attempts at definitions. In March 2006, the participants in NODE.London thought Media Art meant could be defined like so:
Media art: This is work that, in production process, presentation and/or distribution engages with electronic or digital technologies: audiovisual, computerised, networked, mobile or telematic.
NODE.London [Networked, Open, Distributed, Events. London] will also include projects which are:
- Networked: using or critiquing networks which could be technological, communications or social networks.
- Open: using systems which are participatory and mutable and/or investigating models and infrastructures.
- Distributed: projects which are decentralised, sometimes intervening in mediation and distribution systems.
But it's 2008 now and we're not so sure any more.
It doesn't really matter - NODE.London is the sum of it's parts and trying to box it into a definition seems a bit pointless.
[edit] What are NODE.London's objectives?
- To develop seasons, publicity mechanisms, web and print resources for the mutual benefit of participants as well as all media arts and related communities in London.
- To develop and maintain and online resource of media arts events and projects in London and beyond.
- To cooperatively curate seasons of media arts in London.
- To raise funds to collectively publicise and critically reflect on media arts activity in London.

Lots of things! We put on a pre-season of media arts in October 2005 and a fully fledged season of media arts (150 events in 30 days!) in March 2006. Then we rested for a year. Now we're doing a smaller 'Spring NODE.L '08' season to get things started again.
