[edit] Meeting details

This meeting was hosted by body>data>space and The People Speak and held in the body>data>space/Soda studio: 2nd Floor (side door under arch - ring buzzer), 17- 25 Cremer Street, Shoreditch, London E2 8HD

[edit] Summary

This was a very energising and interesting meeting! About 15 people and organisations gathered in bodydataspace, many of whom had projects happening in spring '08. The focus was on what we could do together in such a short space of time, and how we could do it.

Just by putting everyone's events on a timeline, it seemed that we had a mini-season already! We discussed what we should call it, and decided that NODE.London was a good name - with a useful identity, and that we could refer to what we're doing as 'spring node', so that there's the possibility of having summer and autumn NODE.London seasons in 2008 as well if necessary.

We identified which resources could be pooled, and decided to gather as much documentation and contextual material as we could voluntarily - and then (if funding could be got) we would use it to generate good legacy material from the NODE events in spring '08, and use it to gather momentum and further funding for more ambitious activities later on.

The meeting ended with a decision to try to gather all the events mentioned into a programme in early February, and then to have a meeting on the 11th February 2008 (venue tbc.) to try and pull things together.

In the meantime, if anyone has any events they would like included in the cross-promoted publicity and shared programme for the forthcoming spring season, please add them to the Spring NODE.L '08 page, email the discussion list with details, and come to the meeting on the 11th!

  3. Draft ACE application & Finance
  4. Printed programme
  5. Website
  6. Events we know are taking place in March / April

[edit] 1) Decision Making

Saul proposed that decision making should be based on who offers to actually do things, and then communicate about the doing - then people can modify these decisions through discussion by email or in meetings if they wish.

So to 'bootstrap the system' as it were, decisions are made in the following way:

  • Propose, Communicate and Do it, or
  • Propose modification by Communicating it

Ed suggested having 1 page on the wiki- a kind of work log that is updated. Julie added in a useful tip for navigating the wiki and finding updates- go to Recent Changes and you will find anything recently added / amended

A good suggestion was also made to set up the agenda pre meetings in the meeting callout. -Keith to try and do this in future.

[edit] 2) Name of Node:London- to change or not?

This discussion comes up after an email in from Marc Garett of Furtherfield suggesting to choose a name for the festival. It was pretty unanimous response that we should keep the Node:L name / brand etc, but come up with a festival title as he suggested. Node:L has collatoral, recognition and a good buzz going- this was also agreed at the Burning / Rebirth of NODE.London held on Wed 27 June 2007

It was discussed how to run the March / April season of Node:L, and also to be able to do more events under the Node:L umbrella later in the year? Ghislaine suggested doing a Spring Node:L 08 and then there is always the possibility of doing a Summer Node:L, Winter Node:L etc etc so make it seasonal. This was agreed as a good concept and idea.

We agreed ‘Spring Node:L 08’

It was suggested that the people involved in getting the events together for this Spring Node:L get on and plan the season. Then a call could be put out for Summer Node:L events onto the list for people who have events planned ahead- they could then start their own meetings.

[edit] 3) & 4) Draft ACE application & Finance including Printed programme

Keith stated that the proposal part of the draft application is available on the wiki There are still gaps to fill in- Keith has not had much feedback so far

Rachel Baker has given some feedback on the draft application- that it would be useful to mention as much about other collaborators into the application- so links with Resonance, New work Network etc are important to make.

Keith gave a summary of the purpose of the application- £5k application to ACE GftA

“to bring together a widely distributed and diverse group of practitioners, organisations, institutions, artists and galleries - some of whom were brought together in the highly successful Node.L season of Media Arts in March 2006, to continue highlighting Media Arts activities across London in March 2008 and continuously thereafter” (taken from draft app)

Budget is currently for web development, design for programme, printing costs, co-ordinator post. So no money towards any events- that would be the responsibility to the artist or organisation doing the event.

However a point arose that even if we put the application next week (week commencing 4th February) we may still not hear any results until mid March when the season will have started, and we cannot apply for any activities that have already happened i.e. retrospective funding

The decision was made to apply to ACE for Spring Node:L 08 towards a post publication that can be used to lever funds and interest for onwards Node:L activity beyond this season. To apply for a PR / marketing role, using documentation of all of the events (see listed below)- blogging, writing, photography etc plus co-ordination of the documentation process and evaluation and reporting .

The existing Node:L website will be used for now- using the events calander etc and updating the front page but that some money would be put aside in the budget towards getting an NMX model: http://www.nm-x.com set up for Node:L post the Spring season and using the Spring season to get people on board, signed up to the new site etc. Action: Saul to update front page and talk to Atty. And continue discussions with nm-x on using Drupal. Ed expressed interest in helping with this area.

So resources from the ACE will be applied for to make Node:L sustainable for the future and to fund its legacy and ongoing potentials.

Other income funding routes suggested to follow up were Arts and Business and LCACE (deadline of 8th February)- however it was stressed that because we are at quite a late point now we should aim to try and keep the package as simple as possible.

In terms of money that is needed now towards the print- Anna stated that Gasworks will cover the costs of the designer (they are using any way for their Disclosures programme) and will print extra numbers of brochures for Spring Node:L. It may be that each organisation who are running an event contributes £100 each (possibly less if you are an individual artist) to help pay for the print.

We would be looking at 3000 copies of the PR style leaflet.

Action: Gasworks to provide accurate costings

(I don’t think the figures add up at the minute, a leaflet shouldn’t cost to much and it sounds like people are being asked for too much, Keith) (I think the organisations should chip in but individuals should not be excluded from printed programe due to lack of funds? - julief)

Each contribution from an artist or organisation towards print costs should go in the income line of the budget alongside the Gasworks design costs contributions.

A short discussion ensued about what this leaflet would look like. General consensus was that it should be short, sharp and punchy (simple front end) containing details and short text for each event taking place within the Spring Node:L 08 season (see more info below) with a very catchy, simple text explaining what Node:L is.

The overview text should also include that Spring Node:L 08 is international model, with a clustering of events and people, also showing people where to go for the announcements list and the website etc. Each event can then have a longer, more detailed background info on their event on the website (uploaded by each group themselves).

In terms of people assigning themselves roles for the season, and depending on if the ACE money comes through (although there was the feeling that people would still do their roles voluntarily if necessary).

Both Anna and Julie have suggestions for two very good Arts / Digital Media PR people we could work with if funding came through (Maija Handover from mprh is the person anna + resonance fm worked with.)

Keith and Julie were both willing to work in co-ordination roles

A Graphic Designer for the post publication was not allocated. Saul expressed an interest in doing some documentation of events- perhaps a call could be put out linked to gathering more people for these roles? All posts need to be advertised though for the reasons of public funding.

[edit] 5). Events we know are taking place in March / April

ALL EVENTS NEED TO BE CONFIRMED IN WRITING TO ANNA AT GASWORKS BY 7TH FEBRUARY to be included in the print.

A call needs to be sent out to the lists to say this

  • artsdepot- 8/9th March - Virtual Bodies and Women- Ghislaine to confirm
  • Saul and Adnan- linked to Open Knowledge Foundation. Open Economics panel on 15th March with Simon from Open Mute on open coin and licensing options, Jamie King on voluntary payment systems for file sharing, and one more person.
  • Adnan: 4th April- a fundraising night on the boat in Deptford - headphones concert.
  • Adnan: plus two other events not linked to Open Knowledge Foundation not yet confirmed.
  • body>data>space Open in Process- 2 possibly 3 evenings of discussion in the b>d>s studio linked to digital / performing artists processes and making / creation methodologies. Aiming to do 1 in early March (either 12th or 19th) with the CYNETart festival from Dresden and Soda (Fiddian Warman) linked to Robot project. Also would aim to do another event in April (2nd or 16th) linked to EU Culture 2007 project Post ME_New ID- post modern condition of modern european (link to wiki?) with international partners Eira from Lisbon and CIANT from Czech Republic.
  • Andi- Netaudio Taster night on 11th April at the Korsan Bar - 161-165 Kingsland Road, London E2 8AL. A night of networked music with workshop on internet tools early in the evening. More info on www.netaudiolondon.cc
  • Max- Film Mobile Exhibition- mobile technologies at London Gallery West in Harrow. From 3rd April for 3 weeks. 1st April Film Mobile conference involving the BBC also linking in to Lumiere Cinema in Oxford Circus.
  • Area 10 Peckham- Media Lab launch- mid April. Julian and Jenny are programming an evening of events at Studio 10 in Peckham- demo of technologies, open source- research art / digital projects. Would be interested in doing a call to Node:L news lists to see who would be interested in presenting / performing? Also a suggestion that some could be linked to some kind if final party like the last Node:L???
  • CDR Plastic People- Ghislaine to let them know re: possibilities of involvement
  • Disclosures 29 - 30 March + 'floating' events through April. Organised by Gasworks

Other events that came in via email:

  • Isabel Lilly- broadcast event 24/25th March
  • Ivan Thorley- MA student and equipment manager at Brunel University interested in doing some large scale projection (could possibly link to Area 10). Ivan also has stated that he has access to equipment at Brunel and would be prepared to work on admin too if it was needed
  • David Muth- doing an evening of experimental film in collaboration with 6pack in Vienna at a Kingsland Rd venue- date tbc

It was also suggested that we talk to Resonance and New Work Network to ask them to be involved.

[edit] 6). Website

The team that created http://NM-X.org based on Drupal (http://drupal.org) would quote £2000 for creating a similarly functional site - so this could be put into ACE application.

maintaining a drupal site (to keep security updates) etc. would cost about 1000 at commercial rates, but perhaps DIY/in kind or cheaper offers can be found

We will use existing www.nodel.org for now. Saul to modify front page and to look into password retrieval for those who have lost passwords

Two more Node:L meeting dates are scheduled in for Monday 11th February and Monday 25th February. A call will be put out to see where we want to host these meetings although body>data><space are happy for their meeting room to be used again. Action: Keith
